Saturday, 28 July 2018

Next Class Wednesday 1 August 10.00am

Hi Everyone,

We'll meet for the first time this term on Wednesday. The challenge for Wednesday, send us a photo you took with your smart phone AND edited or enhanced with a phone app. Please send it to dianebohlen@gmail.com, preferably before Wednesday.

The main topic will be LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY.

Landscape photography is a personal or poetic expression rather than just a copy of everything that's out there. We appreciate a photograph not for the ways they precisely render reality but ways in which they transcend it. We respond to images that show expression of something other than a replication of the world.... (Linde Waidhofer)

Phone Photography - Part 1

Hi Everyone,

It was such an interesting hands-on meeting on Wednesday that we didn't manage to get through it all in one session, there is such a lot to learn about smart phones. So we'll continue the subject at our next meeting on the 6th of June. In the meantime try all the functions you've learned and send us a photo you've taken with your phone for the Show and Tell segment.

More before the next meeting.

Wednesday, 9 May 2018

Next Class Wednesday 16 May 10.00am

Hi Everyone,

Have you all taken some portrait shots of family or friends? If you have, we'd like to receive one to include in the Show and Tell segment. Please send it to dianebohlen@gmail.com before Tuesday.

Now to the main topic.

They say the best camera is always the one you have with you. In this techno-age, it is most likely your smart phone. So we're going to talk about taking pictures with your phones.

We'll also look at some interesting Photo Apps that users are excited about.

SEE YOU ON WEDNESDAY

Saturday, 28 April 2018

Next Class Wednesday 2 May 10.00am

Hi Everyone,

Following last meeting's topic, the challenge for the Show and Tell segment, Show Emotion in a Photograph. If you haven't already done so, we'd like to see your photograph. Please send such a photo before next Tuesday, to
dianebohlen@gmail.com

The Topic for this Wednesday is PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN

Portrait Photography is more than head and shoulders. It can be the whole person set in their environment to make the photo tell a story. On the other hand, it can be a photo of parts of the body, like hands, or you can fill the whole frame with the face or part of it.

We'll talk about tips of photographing children.

Thursday, 12 April 2018

Next Class Wednesday 18 April 10.00am

Hi Everyone,

Are we ready for another term of Photography Basics? Our first class is next Wednesday at 10am.

Following our last talk on Travel Photography, the challenge for the Show and Tell segment was to send us a photo from a recent trip so we can include it in our slideshow. Please send it to dianebohlen@gmail.com before next Tuesday.

The main topic will be "THE HEART OF A PHOTO," in other words, how to evoke emotion and move viewers of your photos so they gasp in awe.

End of Term 1

Hi Everyone,

Today's photography lesson was the last one for Term 1. Bill and Diane will be in Singapore on the 21st March so no class on that day.

There are no U3A lessons in school holidays so, the first lesson in Term 2 will therefore be on Wednesday 18 April at 10.00am.

The challenge for those who want to participate, send in one photo of a recent trip you've been on.

HAVE A NICE BREAK

Tuesday, 6 March 2018

Next class is on Wednesday 4 March - 10.00am

Hi Everyone,

If you haven't already done so, please send us a recent photo for the Show and Tell segment using light to illustrate what we talked about at the last meeting.

The main topic will be TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY.  Most of our travel shots are imitations of post cards. It is common to snap iconic images such as the Sydney Opera House or the Eiffel tower. However we should try to think outside the postcard shot.

SEE YOU TOMORROW

Friday, 16 February 2018

Next Class is on Wednesday 21 February - 10.00am

Hi Everyone,

Have you been clicking those shutters since the last meeting? With composition elements in mind, obviously.

Remember the challenge:

If you haven't already done so, remember to send us one image you have taken since the last meeting using one or more elements of composition. Sent them to Diane. dianebohlen@gmail.com

On Wednesday, we'll talk about an other element important in photography, and that is natural light and how to make use of it.

Light is one element to which we must pay particular attention so as to communicate visually effectively. Light and composition are the most important elements of photography. After all the meaning of the word “Photograph” comes from the Greek; photo = light and graph = to draw. So photograph = to draw with light.

Our First Meeting

Hi Everyone,

We had 36 U3A members and residents attending our first meeting yesterday morning. Diane talked about Composition of an image to make it engage the viewer, evoke emotion and tell a story. She explained the Rule of Thirds, Lines, Patterns and framing a shot being ingredients that can be used to create stunning images.

Click on the lesson notes on the right sidebar if you want a reminder, or CLICK HERE

Our first meeting was well attended

The next meeting is on Wednesday 21 February when the topic will be using natural light to enhance your photographs.

If you wish to participate, the challenge is:
1. to find the grid in your camera, phone etc.
2. to take a photo using some of the rules of composition and send it to dianebohlen@gmail.com

We'll start the next lesson with a brief Show and Tell segment with your photos.
